Analyzing Information- Coming Winter 2010
Analyzing Information- Coming Winter 2010

EdSteps is currently working on defining the skill of Analyzing Information.  Once this work is done, EdSteps will invite teachers, students and the public to submit work samples that demonstrate high quality analysis of information.
EdSteps will announce its formal solicitation for work samples in the fall of 2010.

The Analyzing Information workgroup is currently soliciting feedback on this draft definition of the skill:

Analyzing information is critical inquiry into a message, delivered via any form of digital, print or audio communication, such as a news article or broadcast, advertisement, Website, documentary or speech. Effective analysis demonstrates a deep understanding of the intent, accuracy, credibility and potential impact of a message.

Understanding the effectiveness of the message may include analysis of the following components:

·        The purpose and intent of the message

·        The credibility and use of the source(s)

·        The credibility of the author(s)

·        The accuracy of the message

·        The potential impact on the ideas, values, points-of-view, and/or emotions of consumers

When the Analyzing Information solicitation for work is available, it will include all necessary details for schools, teachers, students and individuals from all professions to submit samples of work that demonstrate this skill.

The Analyzing Information workgroup is chaired by Felice Nudelman, Executive Director for Education at the New York Times.  The committee is comprised of expert educators from state departments of education and other advocates.
